A Potato Tale

PERFORMANCE AWARDED WITH THE “GOLDEN STAGE CROSS”

Opera for children in 2 acts

Libretto by Daiva ČEPAUSKAITĖ

And the story begins as in real life, sorry, I mean, as in a fairytale – a war because of food was happening between the kingdom of Mice and the kingdom of Potatoes. The starving Mice attacked the satiated kingdom of Potatoes and kidnapped the wayward Princes Potato, the only child of King Potato. The young Radish who was soft hearted naive “poet” in love with the princes saw everything. In the fatal fight between Mice and Potatoes the General Beet tried to save the Princes Potato, who was promised to him as a reward from the King Potato. To his own surprise the young Radish became the hero who rescued the Princes. Everyone celebrated the day and even Baron the Noodle from Italy happened to come to the ball…

In Antanas Kučinskas words, “this fairytale is a playful, witty and dynamic metaphorical reflection of today’s world and of universal themes. It’s a peculiar paraphrase for such themes as social conflict (sleepy elite – Potatoes and restless populace - Mice), conflict between generations (the Princes Potato – the King Potato), the sacra and profana opera and even for the eternal origin of drama and musical theatre’s conflicts. The idealization of fairytale is changed by irony, satire, which motivates you to look more openly and honestly to the fascination and foolishness of human nature. I believe it is an accurate view of the present day situation and because of that, this fairytale should be not only a fun distraction, but a relevant and meaningful opera to children and their parents.”
