Notre-Dame de Paris

Opera-melodrama in 3 acts

Notre Dame de Paris is created by the most popular modern Latvian composer Z. Liepinsh. The success of the opera-melodrama was achieved not only by the original and absorbing opera language, but also due to the durability and glory of the 19th c. French Romantic Victor Hugo. It is an exciting story about the oppositions existing in the world and personality: beauty and ugliness, good and evil, the divine and atrocious origins; the convincing stage management and the honest performance of actors touch everybody’s hearts.

Z. Liepinsh is one of the most popular, even the most scandalous Latvian composers. His popularity in the country and outside may compete only with Raimondas Paul, his compatriot.

Z. Liepinsh was born on 14 10 1952 in Liepoja, in the family of musicians. The first songs he created when he was seventeen years old, and after the studies in Latvia State Conservatory Z. Liepinsh became an active member of various pop music, rock groups, and companies, their instrumentalist as well as song author and performer. Already at the beginning of 1980 Z. Liepinsh songs headed the list and became hits. That was the beginning year of the young composer’s carrier, accompanied by awards in various international festivals of popular songs.

The composer does not limit himself only to Estrada genre, but he has been writing music for films and theatre directions. The creative Z. Liepinsh activity in the theatre was crowned by the rock opera Lačplesis (the latter became a true manifesto in Latvia during the years of revival) and operas From Rose and Blood and Notre Dame de Paris.

Notre Dame de Paris premier took place in April 1997 in Riga Opera Theatre; the role of Quasimodo was performed by the Latvian pop music star Rodrigo Fomins, well known to Lithuanian public. The opera in Riga has already been played about a hundred times. Z. Liepinsh is granted the Grand Latvia Prize for this opera and awarded the Latvian Three Stars Order.

The success of Notre Dame de Paris was achieved not only by the original and absorbing opera language, but also due to the durability and glory of the 19th c. French romantic Victor Hugo. Obviously, Z. Liepinsh was greatly influenced by the romantic Victor Hugo aesthetics based on the theory of contrasts which exist in the world and the personality: beauty and ugliness, good and evil, the divine and atrocious origins.

The play fascinates with the performers of the Quasimodo role: Lithuania’s Estrada stars Edmundas Kučinskas and Deivydas Norvilas (Deivis). D. Norvilas has already become the symbol of modernism in Klaipeda State Music Theatre, whereas E. Kučinskas had his first successful debut on the theatre stage. The role of the destined Esmeralda, who sets aflame with love the stoop’s heart, is performed by the very well known Theatre soloist Rita Petrauskaitė, while the complicated and dramatic Frolo role – by bass Artūras Kozlovskis. The convincing roles are also performed by other Klaipeda State Music Theatre soloists – Valerija Balsytė, Mindaugas Gylys, Dalia Kužmarskytė, Aurelija Dovydaitienė, Šarūnas Juškevičius, Viačeslavas Tarasovas, Kęstutis Nevulis, Loreta Ramelienė.

The townspeople, the poor, the robbers, the lepers, the blind, the actors, the guardians, the executioner, the cardinal and his suite are played by Theatre chorus singers, ballet dancers, and stage workers.
