The Star Opera
An opera for children in 2 acts, sung in Lithuanian
Libretto by Daiva Čepauskaitė
In the third and final part of the trilogy of operas for children by Antanas Kučinskas and Daiva Čepauskaitė, the mice’s desire to stuff their bellies is finally fulfilled. The starving mice’s wishes are fulfilled by a star that falls from the sky: first they are fed, and then the King of Mice longs to become a star of the stage, so that he can bathe in the rays of fame and glory forever. A competition is held, reminiscent of a musical TV show, and the King of Mice wins the popularity he craves. But the glitter of stardom fades when the King of Mice goes berserk and rejects not only his fellow mice but also his producer. Then he is instantly challenged by a new star, Lady Quack. In search of justice, the mice go to space to find the wish-granting star…
Trusting the little audience, the creators of the Star Opera do not divide the characters into good and evil, do not moralise at the end of the performance, allow little ones to judge for themselves and choose the character that is closest to them. For the first time in the history of the theatre, a special Mouse Jargon Glossary has been added to the programme notes to help little ones interpret some of the words used by the ‘vainglorious’ mice.
