Vilius Vilutis
Vilius Vilutis (b. 1979, Vilnius) began his creative career in 2000 at the Oskaras Koršunovas Theatre (OKT). With this theatre, he toured major international festivals and theatres across Europe, Asia, and Australia. Having made his debut at the Lithuanian National Drama Theatre (LNDT) in 2007 as a member of the creative team for Yana Ross’s production Black Widow, he has designed lighting for more than 30 productions at this theatre. Since 2015, he has served as the chief lighting designer at LNDT. V. Vilutis frequently participates in interdisciplinary events and projects that combine various art forms, such as Fashion Infection, Culture Night, and others. He also shares his experience with the younger generation of theatre artists: as a practical training specialist, he regularly gives lectures to theatre directing students at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre and to scenography students at the Vilnius Academy of Arts.
When creating lighting design for drama, dance, and musical performances, V. Vilutis carefully integrates it with other elements of the stage production. He employs various lighting techniques, directions of light sources, and complex combinations of contrasting colours, which he uses inventively to transform space and highlight the psychological nuances of the action. V. Vilutis collaborates with prominent Lithuanian and international directors (Jonas Vaitkus, Gintaras Varnas, Birutė Marcinkevičiūtė, Artūras Areima, Agnius Jankevičius, Yana Ross, Aleksandras Špilevojus, Kirilas Glušajevas, Jonas Tertelis, Árpád Schilling, László Bagossy, Jo Strømgren, Kirsten Delholm, among others) as well as choreographers (Aira Naginevičiūtė, Rūta Butkus, Loreta Juodkaitė, Laurynas Žakevičius and Airida Gudaitė, Leokadija Dabužinskaitė, and others).
The artist’s work has been recognized with two Golden Stage Cross awards: in 2017, together with the creative team of the production The Bony Old Man on the Iron Mountain (director J. Tertelis, LNDT), and in 2019 for lighting design for Jo Strømgren’s production Doors (LNDT).
